Malcolm & Marie, 2021 – ★★

An overnight look into a couple on “the most important day of his life” shows the fragility of the relationship, delving into its foundations of megalomania, grief, addiction, guilt et al in words more than actions. It see-saws between bouts of aggression and passion between the two which felt like a verbal boxing match, with some musical interludes. Makes somewhat sense for something cobbled up during the lockdown. That said, as much as Washington Jr. and Zendaya have a glowing presence and both convey a range of emotions in the punches they throw in each round, I don’t think I’ll be watching this again in any hurry.
