Haseen Dillruba, 2021 – ★★½

I’m a sucker for a good whodunit, or should we dig deeper — the whydunit genre. The challenge with these is the verdict often relies on the aftertaste. That’s the rub with this one. 75-80% of this was a decent ride, but the climax and reveals let it down. A lot.

The whodunit part seems lazy. It may be set in a small town/city, but it still does feel outdated when a lie detector is the ultimate weapon of the police, and that too leaning all the way into Act 3. By this point, you’ve already put it all together, even if the police haven’t. On top of that, despite it all adding up, it feels like a stretch of the imagination.

This said and done, the whydunit part worked on an emotional level. Primal and relatable. The performances and scenes overall were well-executed, but one wishes that they had a more logical grounding to fix that bad aftertaste. Alas. I’ll just have some Ice-cream instead.
