Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2021 – ★★★ (contains spoilers)

This review may contain spoilers.

Enough hype to finally get me back into the theatres.
Enough hype to expect that bit too much.

The cinema experience of communal emotion worked for me more than the film did. Even for a film based on a comic book for kids, I found myself questioning the logic, within the rules it has imposed on itself, which means even if a little, I was removed emotionally.

Enjoying something due to the immersion and then questioning logic later is fine, but when it happens while I’m watching it, I feel writers got lazy with closing loops.

Avengers assembling in Infinity War, as well as the Spider-Verse animation film, might be a core reason. So sure, partly this is the intertextuality aspect of it. (Google it.)

That said, of all the multiverses, isn’t it too convenient that only the two that Sony churned out over the last twenty years landed up here, not even one new/other multiverse characters? Also getting nitpicky by this point, but didn’t a bunch of New Yorkers see/know the Tobey-version too? None of them landed up either. There’s also Eddie Brock, and if one dead character is back, what about Harry? — Half-arsed justification is Dr. Strange was holding them off.

— Getting into proper spoilers with the finale:

– Ned is now a sorcerer too, but doesn’t remember Peter.. uhm??
– What happens to video recordings of him?
– If everyone is supposed to “forget” Peter Parker for this to work, would that not include Peter himself?
– How is he able to get a new place if his existence is no longer? Forged documents?

Shoddy answer to it all — Oh, but magic. Yea’….. sure.
I’m definitely getting Marvel fatigue now.
Moving on.
